The Israel Vocal Art Institute (IVAI)grew from a small core of passionate vocal-music lovers who were determined to create a vocal-arts tradition in Israel, to an international enterprise of the highest caliber.
Since its inception in 1987, IVAIcontinues to serve as a cultural enrichment vehicle on numerous fronts;promoting young Israeli singers by means of scholarships to enable them to become professional opera singers on the stages of the world, while creating and enhancing culture in Israel by turning Tel Aviv into a Mecca for the education and training of opera singers worldwide.
While nurturing the music careers of budding Israeli artists by bringing top-of-the-line artists to work with local singers, IVAI serves as a tool for “musical diplomacy” as it brings foreign faculty and workshop participants to Israel, where they learn about the country from an insider’s point of view. These visiting artists and students return to their home countries with a positive perspective about Israeli culture, people and daily life which is quite absent in the international media. The relationships developed between the Israeli artists and their colleagues serve as a bridge for better understanding as they continue to meet over the years and allow them to create the professional and social ties they will use later as they advance towards an international career.
It has been proven over and over again that the invaluable experience gained by these young singers atIVAIprovides them with the perfect preparation needed to enter the world of opera, providing them with the tools needed for auditions, competitions and performances.
Graduates of IVAI's Summer Opera Program have gone on to represent Israel and the program with great honoras they received engagements from all the major musical organizations in Israel and on stages worldwide. The most veteran IVAI crop of graduates,SusannaPoretsky, Denis Sedov, Chen Reis, Anna Skibinsky, Sharon Rostorf-Zamir, and Larissa Tetuev, have represented IVAI with great distinction as their careers blossomed internationally, including engagements with the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, La Scala, the Bastille, and other pkaces as Sweden, Spain, South America, South Africa and Japan. These first-crop laureates loyally return to IVAI to guest-perform and teach.
Having its graduates take over the local stage and representing Israel as cultural ambassadors the world over is the greatest reward for all those supporting IVAI.
The workshop is a greenhouse for budding young singers whose potential is determined by the faculty. Every year at the recommendation of the teachers,IVAI grants scholarships to Israeli singers for continuation of studies in Israel and abroad. One of the key elements of IVAI’s success is this on-going support of young artists. These singers are invited to return to the program and are awarded study scholarships to continue working abroad with the same teachers who visit Israel annually. An average of $100,000 has been awarded in scholarships annually to cover travel and costs for auditions, private vocal study, and vocal coaching in Israel and abroad.
IVAI is a registered NGO with an 8-member Board of Directors which is actively involved in every facet of the endeavor - financially, artistically and administratively. As leading members of the community working on a volunteer basis and with integrity to spare, the Board’s management of the workshop and scholarship program is professional, exemplary and unequalled in its selfless commitment.
In 2003, immense demands on Tel Aviv Municipality’s budget which is suffering the cutbacks so pervasive in the Israeli economy, forced them to reduce their support. In order to keep up its fabulous work, IVAI must now raise extra funds each year (in addition to the scholarship fund). IVAI calls on music lovers, lovers of Israel, and all those who are committed to promote a cultured societytohelp continue the IVAI tradition. Each contribution is invaluable.
Contributions to IVAI are tax-deductible under Israeli and American tax laws.
Donations can be made payable to IVAI via our Israeli account or via the PEF in the USA .
